In Brooklyn, when Sandy washes a full bar ashore, you party in it
11/6/2012Amid the devastation, superstorm Sandy bestowed a gift onto the streets of Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn: a booze-filled bar torn from its foundation at the Gateway Marina and carried for two miles in the rushing floodwaters. Residents quickly tagged it "Sandy's Bar" and went to work lapping up their consolation prize while their homes dried out (talk about silver linings). "We had a big party," says one local. "This was a great opportunity to get our minds off everything." Folks in the neighborhood joined forces, rigging the makeshift drinking establishment with generators and restocking the bar. Sadly, this gift from the weather gods was razed on Saturday for safety reasons — leaving residents with nothing else to do but clean up. [Source]
