If you hear that annoying hum, you might be Canadian

5/2/2012

What makes an incessant noise, has Barry White-like bass tones and can only be heard by Canadians? Nobody knows, apparently, but the citizens of Windsor, Ontario, would like an answer. The mysterious "Windsor Hum" has irritated residents for two years and has been blamed for everything from knocking objects off shelves to making people and animals sick. In an "X-Files"-ish twist, Americans claim they can't hear the sound, although Canadian officials point their sleep-deprived fingers at Zug Island, a steel-mill industrial zone on our side of the Detroit River. Michael Bowdler, the Michigan mayor with authority over Zug, isn't showing much sympathy. "The only place I'm hearing noise from is Canada -- from politicians complaining," he said.
