Ignorant man puts 64 lbs of mercury for sale on Craigslist5/18/2012
A man in Floodwood, Minn., found 64 pounds of mercury in his grandfather's garage. His next move? Putting the toxic windfall up for sale on Craigslist for $650. Fortunately someone spotted the ad and was alarmed enough to alert the authorities to the dangerous item. To save time, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency decided to just buy the mercury from the Craigslist seller in order to dispose of it properly. They managed to negotiate a bargain price and seized the mercury before it could do any harm. A good thing too, since "if even a few ounces of mercury are spilled, it can set off a major hazardous materials response," the MPCA explained.
