Ikea ad with deep-voiced lead offends Thai transgender group
1/24/2013How do you say "PR nightmare" in Swedish? An Ikea ad has sparked outrage from a Thai transgender group, which says the ad reinforces "negative" stereotypes by portraying transgenderism as a "deceitful and deviant lifestyle." In the commercial (the title has been translated as "Forget to Keep Hidden"), a woman strolls through Ikea on the arm of a man. Overcome with excitement over the store's wares, her voice drops several octaves. Her horrified beau runs off as she lifts a heavy box — not, presumably, because he's loath to help with assembly. Ikea says it has spoken with the Thai group and is working on an official response. [Source]
