Illinois ponders letting undocumented immigrants get driver's licenses
11/22/2012Illinois might soon become the third U.S. state — and the most populous — to allow undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses. A bipartisan coalition of powerful Illinois politicians, including Gov. Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, are pushing the bill, which will be officially proposed when the state legislature convenes Nov. 27. The licenses would be visually different than the standard driver’s licenses, and supporters say the law would help drastically reduce the number of uninsured drivers. Electoral politics are reportedly playing no small role in driving the legislation; with the state’s large and growing Latino population, Illinois lawmakers clearly (if not cynically) have seen which way the political winds are blowing.
