Cellphones banned to stop women talking to guys they actually like

12/6/2012

Women in the eastern Indian village of Patna have been banned from using cellphones. According to a council committee, the use of phones had resulted in high rates of elopements where arranged betrothals are favored. This "debasing" of the "social atmosphere," has caused considerable embarrassment for the town, according to committee head Manuwar Alam. "Even married women were deserting their husbands to elope with lovers," he said. "That was shameful for us." Single women caught with a phone will be fined $180. Not surprisingly, the move has been met with protests. [Source]
