Mourdock loses to Donnelly in wake of rape comments
11/7/2012In the tight race for a seat in the Senate representing the state of Indiana, Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly has defeated Tea Party-backed Republican Richard Mourdock. The two had been neck and neck for the seat of former Senator Dick Lugar, but it seems that the national uproar caused by Mourdock's comments on rape and abortion may have ultimately swayed the race in Donnelly's favor. Mourdock's claim that rape-induced pregnancies should not be aborted because the baby was "part of God's plan" made national headlines for all the wrong reasons in an election year increasingly defined by the debate over women's reproductive rights.
