Braves fans pelt infield with trash in response to infield fly call

10/6/2012

The first game of Major League Baseball’s expanded playoffs ended about as badly as one can. In the eighth inning of Friday night’s National League wild-card playoff between the St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves, the Braves appeared to have loaded the bases when Andrelton Simmons lifted a short fly ball to left field that fell between two St. Louis players. It looked like a hit, but left-field umpire Sam Holbrook called Simmons out under the infield fly rule, leaving the Braves with two outs. Angry Braves fans pelted the field with debris, causing a 19-minute delay while the grounds crew cleaned up. St. Louis won 6-3, eliminating Atlanta from the postseason and ending longtime Braves third baseman Chipper Jones’ career on a very sour note.[Source]
