Iran may or may not have stopped enriching uranium

11/5/2012

It sounded like fantastic international news earlier today when reports from Al-Arabiya stated that Iran had stopped enriching uranium. According to the news site, Foreign Policy and National Security Commission of Parliament Mohammad Hossein Asfari announced that the enrichment process, which many countries feared would lead to the development of nuclear weaponry, was being shut down due to international sanctions. Unfortunately, it looks like any celebration may have been a bit premature, as Iran immediately made several announcements saying Asfari was misquoted and claiming that enrichment is still up and running. Just another reminder that sometimes the only difference between business as usual and an international incident is whether or not the translator is actually paying attention. [Source]
