Universities in Iran make some degrees male-only to create 'balance'

8/23/2012

Iran has the highest ratio of female-to-male college undergraduates in the world — or had, we should say, as the country has decided to make 77 bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degree courses male-only. Iranian women outperformed men by three to two passing entrance exams, which is just too bad for them if they were planning on majoring in English literature, computer science or business management because in 36 universities across Iran, those classes will be forbidden to women. Girls are also banned from electrical engineering, English translation and nuclear physics. Iran’s higher education minister supports banning half the country from freely pursuing higher learning, saying single-gender courses create "balance." [Source]
