99 live cats seized from hoarder's home, 67 dead ones found in freezer
1/27/2013Irene Vandyke told authorities she was doing just fine. Mind you, the New York feline fanatic had accumulated 99 cats living in stacked crates — not to mention the 67 dead ones in the freezer — but that’s not too much to handle, is it? The sad tale coming out about the Schoharie County widow and her animal-hoarding compulsion has enraged some and depressed others as the gritty details emerge, particularly that she turned down help for the cats from shelters, as well as mental health assistance for herself. Acquaintances speculate the sudden death of Vandyke’s husband in 2010 put her hoarding problem into fast-forward. The 99 cats and one dog were taken to animal shelters and given antibiotics, and authorities are debating whether to file charges against Vandyke. [Source]
