Sledding fail turns into chain-reaction calamity on thin ice

12/31/2012

There was no shortage of willing rescuers when a man's out-of-control sled ride sent him plunging into Jackson Lake outside Wrightwood, Calif. And that was the problem. One by one, the well-intentioned and cluelessly curious wandered out onto the brittle ice — men, children, a dog. Soon there were half a dozen or more flailing in the frigid water who needed saving. As comical as it looked, it was actually quite dangerous: Mickey Herman, who filmed the episode, noted the initital victim couldn't swim and went under three times. All were eventually pulled to safety within 10 minutes and are doing fine, but hopefully with their taste for adventure chilled.
