200 strangers come to ex-Marine's funeral after Facebook plea
2/22/2013The fear of dying alone is a powerful feeling, and even after we die, many of us dread the thought of being forgotten. For one former British Royal Marine, a funeral without mourners was a very real possibility. The staff at an English nursing home feared they would be the only attendees of the ceremony for James McConnell, who died last month and did not have relatives he was close with. The Rev. Bob Mason posted a message on Facebook asking for people to attend a stranger’s funeral, and also reached out to the Royal Marines Association, which reposted Mason’s message. When McConnell was laid to rest, more than 200 people attended, including a number of veterans. [Source]
