Man who recanted deathbed murder confession is convicted11/6/2012
In 2009, James Washington, in jail and having suffered what he thought was a fatal heart attack, made a deathbed confession to a guard. Washington said he had “killed somebody. I beat her to death.” The crime the Nashville man admitted to was the murder of Joyce Goodener, who was found dead in 1995 in an empty house. Police had been stymied by a lack of evidence -- there was no trace of a DNA sample -- and though Washington had been a suspect, there was nothing tying him to the crime. After his health improved, Washington tried to recant his confession, but was convicted at a recent trial and received a life sentence. [Source]
