Longtime Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss dies

2/18/2013

Dr. Jerry Buss, the longtime owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, has died. Buss (whose age is reported as either 79 or 80, "due to a discrepancy in his birth year") bought the team in 1979. During his nearly 34-year tenure, the team won 10 NBA championships. In his first season, the Lakers drafted Michigan State center Magic Johnson and won its first championship under Buss. The Lakers picked up four more titles during the 1980s, then added to that total after Buss traded for a just-drafted high school baller named Kobe Bryant. "While we argue endlessly over the greatest player of all time, the argument for greatest owner is anything but an argument," Lakers Nation tweeted. "It's Jerry Buss." [Source]
