Pffft, that papyrus saying Jesus had a wife is so fake, Vatican says

9/28/2012

Jesus is apparently single again. The Vatican is casting doubt on the authenticity of the fragment of ancient papyrus unveiled this month in which the words "Jesus said to them, my wife" were written in Egyptian Coptic, prompting speculation that Jesus may have been married. "Substantial reasons would lead one to conclude that the papyrus is indeed a clumsy forgery," the editor of the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, wrote in an editorial. "It's a fake." Other scholars are equally skeptical. Forged-Gospel expert Francis Watson posited that someone may have found an old scrap of papyrus and written on it quite recently to sell it and make a buck. It’s probably not too late to return the wedding gift. [Source]
