JFK Airport marksmen blow away bunnies with shotguns

4/22/2012

Talk about splitting hares. Port Authority and USDA workers routinely gun down rabbits and hares at JFK Airport, killing Eastern cottontails and black-tailed jackrabbits to decrease hazards for pilots (Rabbits have been blamed for three U.S. plane crashes over the last 30 years). Ninety-nine rabbits and hares were killed at the Queens, New York, airport last year by Elmer Fudd wannabes. But workers aren't always shooting to kill. They also use a $2,000 "avian dissuader," a light-beam that scares critters like birds and rabbits away before they need to be taken down. Bunnies, see the light and you'll be saved.
