John Cleese's awful Oscar Pistorius tweet makes Twitter mad
2/15/2013John Cleese learned the hard way that when it comes to tweeting, fawlty word choice can lead to an epic Twitterstorm (also, at least be funny). Cleese weighed in on the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp, who was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, South African track star and double amputee Oscar Pistorius, with a Valentine’s Day tweet that read, “Oscar’s defence will be that he was absolutely legless at the time.” First, jokes about murders — not funny. Second, “legless” is British slang for being drunk, but no doubt Cleese probably intended the double meaning, thinking himself a clever bloke. The Twitterverse did not take kindly to his tweet, blasting him for it, which led to a legless apology. Weak sauce, man. [Source]
