John Kerry praises 1st Amendment for protecting the right to stupidity
2/26/2013In his first official trip as secretary of state, John Kerry defended America's First Amendment, calling freedom of speech and freedom of religion "something worth fighting for." Kerry addressed a group of German students in Berlin and praised America's political and religious tolerance, but he acknowledged it doesn’t only protect intelligent speech. "People have sometimes wondered about why our Supreme Court allows one group or another to march in a parade … and they carry signs that are an insult to one group or another," he said. "The reason is, that's freedom of speech. In America, you have a right to be stupid — if you want to be." And that sound you just heard was thousands of people in the U.S. breathing a collective sigh of relief. [Source]
