One small charity donation per man, one giant win vs. Internet trolls

2/6/2013

Writer and blogger John Scalzi had a problem: a "racist sexist homophobic dips***," as he put it, who Scalzi said, "likes to use my name to whip up his gibbering followers, who then often come over here to troll the comments." Scalzi, who is the president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, knew that an intractable problem calls for a creative solution. So, as the Guardian reported, he came up with one: a $5 donation to an array of charities, including the NAACP and Emily's List, every time his name was mentioned on the troll’s website. As a bonus, Scalzi has a lot of high-profile friends, including Internet/real-life star Wil Wheaton, who agreed to match donations. The troll tip jar now stands at a mighty $50,000. [Source]
