Iraq vet spends months in Mexican prison because of antique shotgun
12/13/2012Jon Hammar didn't think twice about putting his grandfather's antique shotgun in the back of his truck, somewhere beneath the stack of surfboards for his wave-chasing trip to Costa Rica. When he got to the border between the U.S. and Mexico, agents on the American side waved him through, but their Mexican counterparts immediately arrested him for "possession of a weapon that's restricted for military use." That was in August. Since then, Hammar, a Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been in prison in Mexico, sometimes chained to his bed. Despite the efforts of congressmen and the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Hammar is still in custody. "This is outrageous," Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said. "Enough is enough." [Source]
