Former Marine jailed over shotgun to be released from Mexican prison12/22/2012
Jon Hammar, the former U.S. Marine who has been sitting in a Mexican prison cell since August because he brought his grandfather's antique shotgun across the border, was set to be released Friday. Hammar, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, attempted to declare the shotgun upon his entry into Mexico but was still arrested for being in a possession of a "weapon restricted for military use." The decision to release Hammar reportedly came after a judge ruled in his favor at a hearing on the charges. Despite the judge's ruling, the Mexican ambassador to the United States, Arturo Sarukhan, issued a statement declaring Hammar's detainment the right decision based on Mexico's strict gun laws.
