"...I handed over to you an archdiocese that was second to none in protecting children and youth." Cardinal Mahoney - despicable
LA archbishop fires cardinal over handling of old sex abuse claims2/3/2013
In a history-making turn, the Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of Los Angeles has relieved retired Cardinal Roger Mahony of his public and administrative responsibilities because of Mahony's alleged mishandling of "painful and brutal" allegations (dating back to the 1930s) of sex abuse by priests. The action came after a California judge forced the archdiocese to release about 12,000 pages of church documents revealing how it had dealt with abuse allegations and which priests and bishops were involved; there were 192. The topic was a volatile one, with plenty of harsh reactions around the social media sphere to the cardinal's punishment and the allegations in general. As @Skeptical_Lady tweeted, "Files may reveal what the Catholic Church in Los Angeles knew about sex abuse - good! Now file criminal charges!" [Source]
