World's poorest president makes us look spoiled

11/15/2012

Think all presidents dress well and live in swanky residences? Meet Jose Mujica, aka the world’s poorest president. Sure, he could inhabit the Uruguayan presidential residence, but instead, the 77-year-old vegetarian leader lives on his wife’s ramshackle farm where water comes from a well and laundry dries outside. Forget fancy threads – or even H&M bargains – Mujica relaxes on ancient furniture and drives a 1987 VW Beetle. Purebred Portuguese water dog? Get real. Mujica’s got a three-legged hound. With just $1,800 to his name (in 2010), 90 percent of his monthly $12,000 salary goes to charity. "I don't feel poor,” he says. “Poor people are those who only work to try to keep an expensive lifestyle, and always want more and more." [Source]
