Blind in one eye, pitcher still has vision of making MLB roster
2/21/2013Juan Sandoval isn't the first 32-year-old long shot with a spring training dream of making his first MLB roster, but something else has people rooting for him. A shotgun blast from a drunken restaurant patron in 2006 cost Sandoval his right eye, and the righthanded relief pitcher has scuffled through the minors ever since. Then Tampa Bay Rays pitcher and Dominican countryman Joel Peralta talked his bosses into giving Sandoval a chance, and he's already impressed them with a 94 mph fastball on top of how he's adapted to his circumstance. Said Rays manager Joe Maddon, "I haven't seen anything that would suggest to me that he wouldn't be able to do this." [Source]
