Judge tells lawyer 'It's my way or the Hemingway'

6/30/2012

A Florida lawyer tried to postpone a murder-for-hire trial so he could make his annual appearance in an Ernest Hemingway lookalike contest. Frank Louderback wanted Judge Steven Merryday to understand the importance of being Ernest, casually mentioning that not only was he a three-time contest participant but he'd also reserved SIX hotel rooms for the weekend and didn't His Honor know what a pain in the ass that would be to cancel? Judge Merryday wasn't impressed (Is it really a compliment to know you look like someone who died in 1961?) and rejected Louderback by quoting the last line of Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises." When the sun rises on Contest Day, Louderback better be in court.
