'Ape Woman' who toured with circuses buried 150 years after death

2/13/2013

Julia Pastrana died in 1860, but the longtime "ugliest woman in the world" was just buried. Pastrana, born in Mexico with thick hair covering her face, was exhibited in 19th-century circuses and sideshows as "Ape Woman" or "Bear Woman." She married circus man Theodore Lent and had a son who inherited her disorder; both mother and baby died shortly after the birth. Lent toured with their embalmed bodies (which isn't creepy at all), and both of them ended up in storage in Norway. "When I heard about [Pastrana], I said there's no way she can be left locked away in a warehouse," said Mario Lopez, governor of the state of Sinaloa. Pastrana was buried in a rose-adorned white coffin. [Source]
