Woman swaps stool (yes, that stool) with mom, beats nasty infection

9/26/2012

Kaitlin Hunter was fighting a life-threatening bacterial infection — until she was cured by a fecal transplant. The rare procedure is exactly what it sounds like: Fecal matter from a donor (in this case, Hunter's mother) was "pumped … into [her] colon." Hunter's struggle began after a near-fatal car accident left her with a fractured spine and a lacerated colon. She later contracted clostridium difficile, a nasty bacteria that releases toxins and inflames the colon. Multiple antibiotic treatments didn't help, and after a failed fecal transplant from her father, Hunter's doctors got the OK to try again. It worked. "These patients … want to get better," Dr. Lawrence Brandt said. "The fact that it's stool, it doesn't matter to them." [Source]
