'Super-Jupiter' is mega-planet fit for giant aliens

11/20/2012

We haven't yet identified an alien race of butterfly beings thousands of feet wide, but when we do, we'll know where they live — this newly discovered "Super-Jupiter." "Super-Jupiter" is actually a class of planets: gas giants bigger than their namesake, the largest planet in our own solar system. This Super-Jupiter is 13 times bigger than Jupiter, 170 light years from Earth, and orbits a star — named Kapa Andromedae — that's 2.5 times the mass of our sun. The discovery cames with a bonus — an image of the planet that might not look like much to us but was considered by scientists as a big win, since these planets are difficult to photograph. [Source]
