Kebab cook given 3,333 years to repay tax bill

5/28/2012

A 37-year-old kebab shop owner has narrowly escaped two years' prison after dodging almost $503,000 in taxes. But he hasn't completely escaped punishment, with a German court demanding he perform 500 hours of community service and repay the sum. How many kebabs would you have to sell to repay half a million dollars? Shirtloads, obviously. So the kindly judge has allowed "Mustaffer C" to pay the taxman at a rate the now unemployed kebab man can reasonably afford -- about $12.50 a week -- which should see him settle his debt sometime in May, 5345 AD. Let's hope for Germany's sake there will be a market for "space shawarma."
