Moms say Kenyan hospital turned into a prison when they couldn't pay

12/27/2012

The Pumwani Maternity Hospital in Kenya does good work, but you had better not plan on going home if you don't have the money to pay your bill. The hospital director has admitted that he detains mothers who are unable to pay for their care because he says it’s the only way the practice can stay open. Lazarus Omondi, the director of the maternity hospital, which is located in a poor area of Nairobi, says that women who give birth there have to remain at the hospital until all bills have been settled. But now, the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights has filed a lawsuit on the behalf of two women who say they were beaten by guards with sticks when they attempted to leave without paying.
