Homeless Filipino teen wins $130K peace prize
9/26/2012Prepare to join us in feeling ashamed of ourselves: A 13-year-old Filipino boy with a history of homelessness has won the International Children's Peace Prize and a reward of $130,000. Kesz Valdez grew up sleeping rough in the slums surrounding the capital city of Manila, scavenging through dumps for food. At seven (you know, when we’d pretty much mastered how to multiply), Valdez established a charity that provides basic goods (like footwear and clothing) to similarly disadvantaged youth. In words that Archbishop Desmond Tutu will never say to us but did say to Valdez: "You are wonderful." [Source]
