If Mars were like Earth, this is what it might look like

1/4/2013

Humans' long fascination with Mars is part fantasy, part wishful thinking. If only, you know, it could sustain life, we'd have another planet we can destroy. Kidding! Kevin Gill, a software engineer and very smart dude, created a computer model of a parallel Mars — one that had the same atmosphere as Earth. His results are stunning. Producing two different projections, his rendering of Mars' eastern hemisphere shows a very green and lush topography, while the western half of the planet features a less-green view. Gill took existing topographic details from Earth and filled in the corresponding areas in Mars. The result is a near-Earth that looks habitable. The pictures above show, at left, Mars as it is and one of the projections at right. [Source]
