Story of whales trapped by ice either ends happily or incredibly sadly

1/11/2013

Earlier in the week there were grave fears for a dozen killer whales trapped in frozen waters near the remote Canadian village of Inukjuak, that were only able to breathe through an increasingly tiny hole in the ice. But nature might have saved the day. Inukjuak locals reported that the ice had shifted in the area around the stranded whales. They haven't been seen since, raising hopes they escaped. But others believe the pod might just be trapped somewhere else. "Whether the whales have found a passage all the way to the Hudson Strait, we probably will never know," said Mark O'Connor from the regional marine wildlife board. [Source]
