Online pirate Kim Dotcom plans broadband giveaway at America's expense

11/4/2012

The Internet’s most notorious pirate is launching an outlandish new venture to give free broadband service to every resident of New Zealand. Kim Dotcom, flamboyant founder of shuttered file-sharing site Megaupload, plans to lay a $400 million fiber optic cable between New Zealand, Australia and the U.S. He’ll finance the project in part by suing Hollywood studios and the U.S. government for "unlawful and political destruction of my business." It would double the nation’s bandwidth and more than triple transfer speeds, Dotcom claims, and would let Internet service providers charge nothing for individual customers. Which would pretty much make Dotcom "King of New Zealand."
