Kiwis ponder charging $100 for a pack of cigarettes
4/23/2012Here's a question for smokers: How many of you would quit the habit cold if the price of cigarettes rose to 100 bucks? Yes, a C note for a single pack of smokes -- that's $5 per cigarette. That's the staggering amount New Zealand's tobacco-craving holdouts may have to cough up. The country's Ministry of Health wants to raise the cost to $100 over the next eight years, while the government seeks to create a smoke-free nation by 2025. The current charge for a pack in New Zealand is $14, but if the ministry has its way, it would rocket to $60 next year and then rise 10 percent every year thereafter.
Would this be a fair price increase?
