Man slapped with record $1.5M fine for pirating films not worth $1.5M
11/2/2012Kywan Fisher recently made an ignominious bit of history — he was fined $1.5 million by a federal court for pirating 10 gay porn films and placing them on a BitTorrent site. The fine awarded to Flava Works, the company that made the films, is the largest ever awarded in a file-sharing piracy case. Fisher, who did not offer a defense, was fined $150,000 for each pirated film. Flava Works traced Fisher through codes it embeds in each copy of its films, and found that Fisher, who had signed up as a customer, had shared them. The films were viewed or downloaded more than 3,000 times, Flava Works said. [Source]
