Theme park simulates illegal border-crossing for curious tourists
9/10/2012Want to simulate the grueling and heart-wrenching plight that kills hundreds of immigrants every year? Turns out you can, all for $18, with La Caminata Nocturna -- a tourist simulation of an illegal border-crossing. The theme park in El Alberto, Mexico, which is the subject of a short documentary (scroll to 0:20 to see footage inside), offers adventure tourists a four-hour experience where they can hike through the brush behind a tour guide smuggler (known as a coyote), as they dodge fake immigration officials and run from "border patrol agents." And if you're worried that basing a fun time on real people's suffering seems a little screwed up, park officials say it raises awareness and brings needed income to locals. So go on and hop those bullet-riddled fences, guilt-free! [Source]
