In a 40,000-person food fight, everybody wins
8/30/2012More than 40,000 fighters gathered in the Plaza Mayor in Bunol, Spain, to throw 120 tons of squishy tomatoes at one another for the city’s annual food-fighting battle royale, La Tomatina. Five trucks brought the ammunition to turn the square into a saucy red foam party. La Tomatina has been going on since 1945, and legend has it the tradition grew from a food fight among a group of childhood friends. Now thousands of fans — many with "Fanatic of the Tomatina" T-shirts — flock from all over the world to pelt each other with tomatoes and then wash off in a nearby river.
