Storm-chaser captures five dramatic waterspouts on video

8/20/2012

It might not have been the best week to go boating on Lake Michigan -- the National Weather Service recorded nine waterspouts there this weekend. Happily for those who like to gape at natural phenomena without getting too close, five of the rare, dramatic-looking spouts -- accompanied by 45-mph winds and lasting only about 45 minutes -- were captured on camera Saturday by storm-chasing freighter captain Eric Treece. "This is the first time I’ve seen waterspouts like that since probably 1997," Treece said of the tornado-like funnels that can form over water when cool and warm air collide. Good thing he had his camera handy. [Source]
