Your desk phone and PC will soon be extinct, IT experts say

8/29/2012

Have a phone on your desk? Start planning its goodbye party. Chief information officers predict work landlines and PCs will soon go the way of switchboards and typewriters, rendered obsolete by smartphones and tablets. Within five years, they say, they'll be historical artifacts. “A decade ago it would have been unthinkable to suggest an office without telephones,” Virgin Media Business exec Tony Grace said of his company’s survey. “Now it’s hard to imagine being separated from our smartphones.” Futurologist Peter Cochrane agreed, saying current phone systems are “about relevant as Morse code” and we’ll all soon be Skyping instead. Only on tablets, not on PCs. Said Cochrane: “You have got to look forward to all personal computers disappearing.” Whoa. [Source]
