'Gangnam Style' parody gets lifeguards fired
9/9/2012The internet is obsessed with Korean pop star Psy’s latest hit, “Gangnam Style,” but it seems like town officials in El Monte, Calif. are not fans. El Monte’s lifeguards released their own “Lifeguard Style” music video to the internet last month to modest YouTube success. But it wasn’t until earlier this week that the stars of the video were sat down and told that they would no longer have their jobs. According to the city, the lifeguards were fired for using the El Monte’s property for “their own personal gain,” since the video was filmed at a city pool after hours. Ironically, the video didn’t start to really take off until the town announced the firing, which means that any YouTube ad revenues the lifeguards might receive will actually be bolstered by the city's decision. Even if El Monte doesn’t reinstate the lifeguards, they may have a future career as backup dancers. [Source]
