Scientists have long argued over whether we need eight consecutive hours of sleep per night, and a look back through history seems to indicate that we may not. According to the BBC, Virginia Tech historian Roger Ekirch promotes the theory that humans have historically snoozed in two distinct chunks, broken up by an hour or two of alertness. Ekirch pored over "diaries, court records, medical books and literature" to back up his belief in segmented sleep.
Compelling evidence includes a 16th-century doctor's manual advising couples that the best time to conceive is "after the first sleep...when they have more enjoyment [and] do it better." As @PaulGreenberg tweets, "Good news for insomniacs."
How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
Well sleep and the study/science of it IS interesting and odd at times!
Some nights I sleep for an hour or two and wake up feeling like I have slept form 8-9 hours....feel rested and ready to..(then its) wait, I need to get back to sleep, which will happen ANYWHERE from 30 mins to 2 hours later, lol.
Other times I wake up 2 hours before the alarm clock, feeling same way AND its best to just go ahead and start the day as going back to sleep for another hour or two takes away that well rested feeling!?!
One thing everyone should be mindful of is sleep apnea...(I was diagnosed with mildly severe sleep apnea years ago....its much better but still comes and goes at time!)
Hope everyone sleeps well and enjoy a lil nap when you can- a simple pleasure of Life! LOL!
This goes to Valleydesperado.
Things are not that simple, as you propose. Those people in lab coats are the ones that we need to thank for everything that we have right now. Every progress that humanity makes, technological, medical... is because of those people.
The way we live cannot be controlled by someone else, we make our own choices. This article simply states that it is possible that segmented sleep is better, it does not force you to apply it. That is your own choice. I suggest you to test it and see if it works for you and even if it does not, you are still just a drop in the sea of people, therefore your isolated case is of no relevance.
Anyway, history has proven that the greatest minds were once considered fools or heretics simply because they were ahead of their time.
So don't judge before seeing the bigger picture!
5 or 6 hours during the week. Take a pill of Diphenhydramine (Benadryl / Unisom) on Fri night. It wont make me tired but I can hibernate for half a day once asleep.
I agree with the Nyquil but watch your liver it has both alcohol & acetaminophen (Tylenol), good swig of Rum or your other favorite liquor will do just as well. Then again we all got to die of something:)
those sleep aids dont work and most likely you will still wakeup and now feel worse from the pill,if not want to take a flying leep off a bridge and call it a fun day for some of those pills will screw with your mood and some even make ya depressed.
you will wakeup hammered and thrashed feeling.
just take a sip of nyquel, cold or not, you will sleep like a baby..
helps clear the sinus airways, it's workd better then any sleep aids, even those natural ones.
u will feel groggy all day off those.
married or not, sleep in seperate rooms, if someone snores like a chainsaw, and kick dog outside. just because your married does not mean you have to sleep in the same bed or even the same room, thats something you learned from the brady bunch...
i feel less hammered if i get 2 hours, wakeup. go back to sleep for another 2 hours and wake up, then again.. then one more time, ya stay up for ten mins each time, and you never wake up hammered or with puffy eyes. and the hours still add up for a good rest.
im lucky to even get 4-5 hours a night.. <--- i piddy diss fool the most
