Los Angeles trades guns for groceries in buyback swap

12/27/2012

There are now 1,500 fewer guns on the streets of Los Angeles, thanks to city-sponsored weapon buybacks held Wednesday in response to this month's Sandy Hook shooting. Among the guns collected (no questions asked) were more than 50 assault rifles, including two fully automatic TEC-9s (a gang favorite), an AK-47 and a Bushmaster rifle like the one used in the Newtown massacre. Organizers even reported that two rocket launchers were surrendered. Those turning in guns, most of which will be destroyed, received grocery-store gift certificates: $100 for handguns and shotguns and $200 for assault weapons. It’s not clear what the rocket launcher donors received, other than an open-mouthed stare. [Source]
