Chinese couples rush to marry because it's 'Love you forever day'
1/4/2013We can't speak for the rest of the world, but romance certainly isn't dead in China. Thousands of Chinese couples swarmed marriage registry offices on Friday — more than 10,000 would-be brides and grooms in Beijing alone — in hopes of locking in a lifetime of love. The reason for the rush? The date, Jan. 4, 2013, sounds similar to the sentence "I will love you all my life" in Mandarin, so it's been cleverly nicknamed, "Love you forever day." Matching days, months and years (remember 12/12/12?) are considered lucky in China, much like the auspicious sound of Friday's date, so marrying on a day that might bring the couple good fortune is highly popular.
