Rapper releases anthem for same-sex marriage

10/7/2012

Hip-hop has never been known as a genre championing gay rights, as Seattle-based rapper Macklemore openly acknowledges in his new song "Same Love." However the video, produced by Ryan Lewis and featuring Mary Lambert, is an anthem for same-sex marriage. While Macklemore himself is not gay, he writes "I might not be the same, but that's not important/No freedom till we're equal, damn right I support it." It's a refreshing change for the genre, and the video's a moving portrayal of a gay man's life: Beginning with his confused childhood to his happy wedding day and unfortunately ending in tragedy. Much respect to a rapper who's willing to go against the trend and stand up for civil rights.
