MADD angry over Urban Outfitters shirts it says promote teen drinking
8/29/2012Youthful hipsters' favorite retail chain, Urban Outfitters, is now getting flak from Mothers Against Drunk Driving for T-shirts that appear to promote drinking. The shirts bear phrases like "USA Drinking Team" and "I Vote for Vodka," messages MADD president Jan Withers calls "not acceptable for children under the age of 21." She says the shirts are "sending the message that it's cool to drink." Urban Outfitters hasn't yet responded to the controversy, but legally, according to a Federal Trade Commission spokesperson, the chain could not be forced to pull them from shelves.
