Man happily exiles himself to remote Alaska island for 1 year

5/11/2012

Wet weather, black bears and a trusty pet dog will be the only companions of Charles Baird, who is about to leave society for a rugged year on a narrow, cold island in Alaska, completely off the grid of modern civilization. For 17 years he's dreamed of building a 12-by-11-foot shed, carrying a .44 at all times, hunting, fishing and avoiding bears in on Latouche Island, all of which he will start actually doing at the end of May. Baird, who used to work for an oil company, plans on filming his year away from the world and making a documentary once he returns to society. Ex-military Baird's only concern? The isolation. (HINT: DON'T LIVE ON A REMOTE ISLAND THEN!)
