Man speed-eats $5K of caviar to win very expensive contest

4/22/2012

In this time of worldwide recession, people are tightening their belts, watching their pennies and occasionally attending speed caviar-eating contests. Alexander Larov won 1,000 rubles (about $326) by throwing back a pound of black caviar faster than 11 other contenders, guzzling the rarefied delicacy in 86 seconds. That amount of caviar equals roughly $5,000, and equal portions were placed before the other competitors, meaning Apartment, the high-end Moscow restaurant that hosted the contest spent $60,000 on less than two minutes of bingeing. What? "In Texas, people organize hot dog and hamburger eating championships ... In Moscow, people eat black caviar instead," a restaurant spokesperson explained. Should we compare how much hot dogs cost per pound, or would that be cruel?
