UPDATE: Manatee joyrider caught on camera turns herself in

10/3/2012

A woman has admitted to straddling a manatee and attempting to ride it in Fort De Soto Park, Fla. When Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez's misdeed was caught on camera, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri held a press conference calling for her to be identified and held accountable. "Go ride a Jet Ski. Don’t use animals," he said yesterday. Later that day, Gutierrez turned herself in, saying she didn't know she'd broken the law. The 52-year-old could be charged with a second-degree misdemeanor under the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act, which prohibits "molestation" (their words, not ours) of sea cows and carries a penalty of up to 60 days in jail or a $500 fine.
